Bed Bug Treatment

Bed bugs sit at the top of the list as one of the worse pest horrors that a person can experience. Often found in hotel rooms and waiting to hitch a ride to your home, these micro-sized bloodsuckers typically lurk inconspicuously in the hidden recesses of bedding, mattresses, box springs and/or behind headboards. Content to stay hidden during daylight hours these critters typically come out after dark to feast on the unsuspecting and scurry back into hiding at first light.

Bed Bugs are small critters ranging in size from 1/16th of an inch upwards to ¼ of an inch. They have oval-shaped bodies, six legs, and two antennae. Their coloration will vary depending on their age as well as whether or not they have been fed recently. Nymphs (young bed bugs) are semi-translucent. When they feed they fill with blood, making their belly a dark brown and sometimes causing a spotted pattern where the blood is visible inside their abdomen. Adult bed bugs will be either a light brown with a flat, oval belly if unfed or a deep brown/red color with an engorged belly if they have fed.

Expert Bed Bug Removal

A large portion of the calls for bed bug treatment services in the Phoenix area results from an unsuspecting traveler who is exposed to an infestation and brings the problem home. One of the easiest ways to bring an infestation home is via luggage.

Most travelers throw their luggage on the bed or floor when they arrive at the hotel. These are prime areas for nesting bed bugs. When the traveler arrives at home the process is repeated. Bed Bugs are excellent hitchhikers. All it takes is for one adult female to hitch a ride to your home and begin laying eggs.

Taking extra precautions may not be enough as your luggage may be stacked by airline personnel upon infested luggage from other travelers.

If you think you have been exposed to bed bugs, don’t panic.

Effective Bed Bug Treatment

What you do after discovering you may have been exposed can make a big difference whether you take the bug’s home. It’s worth proceeding carefully and cautiously since avoiding an infestation can save you thousands of dollars and living a real-life pest nightmare.
It’s important not to assume that suspected bed bug bites which appear after you get home mean you have been bitten at home. Keep in mind that bed bug bites discovered in the days after you come home may have occurred elsewhere. While many people seem to react to bed bug bites within hours or a day or two of being bitten, others do not react for longer. We have heard that having bed bug bite reactions appear a week or two after exposure is possible in some cases. Of course, many people do not react at all.

Bed Bug Control

If you’ve stayed in a hotel, motel, or another type of lodging that experienced a bedbug infestation during your stay, it’s possible your luggage is now infested. Unlike clothing and other washables, you can’t throw your luggage into the dryer to get rid of them.

Step 1 – Empty your luggage and place the contents in plastic bags; seal them until you can wash them. All clothing should be washed in hot water and dried at high temperatures, at least 120 degrees, to ensure that all the bedbugs die.

Step 2 – Take the luggage outside and scrub every nook and cranny with a stiff scrub brush. This will dislodge any egg clusters and dead bedbugs. Vacuum the luggage thoroughly and discard the bag or rinse out the canister.

Step 3 – Using and/or renting a steam cleaner can be effective at removing hidden bugs and unhatched eggs

Step 4 – Vacuum the luggage again to suck up the dead bedbugs, and then discard the vacuum bag immediately. Wrap the vacuum bag in garbage bags and tie tight knots to make sure the bedbugs can’t escape.

Step 5 – Leave the luggage to dry in the sun. In fact, enclosing the luggage in clear plastic bags and left in the Arizona sun for a day or more in itself can be very effective.

Inspect the luggage thoroughly for bedbugs. If any are still lingering, steam clean the luggage again. Repeat the process until you are certain that no bedbugs remain. If the problem persists it’s time to call Bills Pest Termite Control for our bed bug treatment for luggage service.
