Rodent Species in Arizona

Rodents are a common pest in and around homes and businesses in Arizona. There are four main types of rodent species that you need to be aware of in this region, all of which can cause potential health hazards and damage to your home. Keep reading to find out more about these different pests, as well as the rodent control services we offer at Bill’s Pest and Termite.

Common Rodent Species in Arizona

While there are many different types of rodents in Arizona, there are four in particular that Bill’s Pest deals with the most.

  1. Norway Rats
  2. Roof Rats
  3. Pack Rats
  4. House Mice

They might range in size and nest differently, but they all pose the same potential threats to your home and health. Rodents tend to chew on electrical wiring and pipes and can also easily spread diseases like rat bite fever, tapeworm, and salmonella. If you believe you might have a rodent infestation, you should contact Bill’s Pest and Termite immediately to have them exterminated.

Common Rodent Species in Arizona

1. Norway Rats

Norway rats are also known as brown rats, sewer rats, or wharf rats, and while they might have poor vision, they have excellent balance, can jump several feet, and are good swimmers. They are burrowing rodents by nature, but have adapted to living in and around human-occupied buildings where they can be found in basements, crawl spaces, wall voids, sewers, manholes, utility chaseways, and other covered areas close to their food and water sources. You can identify Norway rats by their specific features.

  • Brown coloration.
  • Heavy bodies.
  • Small eyes and ears.
  • Blunt noses.
  • Shaggy fur.
  • Tails that are slightly shorter than their head and body together.

2. Roof Rats

Also known as black rats, this Arizona rat species can be found in metropolitan Phoenix in high-population areas – especially when there are fruit trees and greenery around. As their name suggests, they prefer to live in elevated areas like trees, attics, and drop ceilings, but can also be found in crawl spaces, barns, sheds, and warehouses.

They have a number of other defining characteristics.

  • Roof rat coloring ranges from light brown to jet black.
  • They have more slender bodies.
  • Their fur is smooth and almost silky.
  • When compared to Norway rats, their noses are more pointed.
  • They have larger ears and eyes.
  • They have longer tails relative to their bodies (slightly longer than the head and body combined).

3. Pack Rats

One of the most prolific rodent species in Arizona, the United States, and even the world, is the pack rat. They are notorious for chewing through electrical wires along with their ability to build nests out of almost anything. They have been known to construct their dens in attics and foundations, although they mostly live in the desert or in dark and quiet areas away from people. These nocturnal rodents have specific identifying features.

  • They are smaller than most rats.
  • They have long tails.
  • They have furry feet.
  • Their bodies have fur, not hair.

house mice Rodent Species in Arizona

4. House Mice

The house mouse is small and less intimidating in appearance than a rat, but poses just as serious a threat because house mice can more easily fit through small openings, bringing them closer to humans. They usually reside inside wall voids behind cupboards, where they can easily slip in and out to access your food (which they contaminate with their germs and filth). This Arizona mouse species is easy to identify.

  • They are small and slender.
  • Their length rarely exceeds three to four inches.
  • They have pointed noses.
  • Their eyes are small.
  • Their ears are large
